1. After I installed and activated your extension, I noticed the following:
   1. If I check-in a .eml file, I get an error on the share page’s document library, with a red bar at the top saying “No items”.

   2. The error logs shows:

   3. The error message disappears when I remove the .eml file using the ‘alfresco interface’

   4. Now all other content types does not have a flash preview. And the error log is the same.

2. What version of Alfresco are you using ?

   The EMLTransformer tries to figure out whether you want text/plain or text/html previews. In order to do that, it tries get a reference to the Transformers subsystem – which does not exist on your system. (The extension changes the default for emails to text/html).

   I tried the attached jars in an otherwise vanilla 4.2.e Community Edition installation and it works fine for me.

3. We are on 4.2.c Community Edition. Shouldn’t it be already on? I don’t see a “Transformer” subsystem here:

   /alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco/subsystems$ ls

4. Looks like it has been introduced after 4.2.c.

   The thing is that in order to support both mimetype transformations, I need to know the actual transformation setting. That is why I try to figure out by looking at the Transformation subsystem.

   You might want to have a look at the sources if you need the extension working on 4.2.c.

5. I use this extension and it’s works very well. I create a JS rules in order to copy the email in a other location and it’s works too but, when I open the EML copy, I don’t see the attachement. How can I set where the attachment are ?

6. Alexis: You have read the hint above, right ? ;)

   Anyways, the attachment folder is in the same folder where the email is. The extension hides it (applying sys:hidden) because we did not want to see ugly named folders “Message-xyz-attachments”.

7. I tried to use this extension but i have some problem. I use a 4.2.F Community Edition.
   These are the problems:

   – when i move an email from outlook it work very good and i see (in outlook) the my email with attachment, but when i try to see this email in Share, i see only the email without the attachment (also if the size is the size of the email with attachment)…..so i don’t see the attachment’s image on document library and nothing attachment if a go inside the email (in the preview)
   – in the preview of my email i lost all information html (as a signature in the email).
   – in add if i disable the extension i don’t never see the attachment folder

   Is there a way to resolve it?

8. I found the solution for the first my problem:
   in alfresco.global.properties i insert correctly:
   – imap.server.attachments.extraction.enabled=true
   – contentreich.email.imap.attachment.hideAttachmentFolders=true

   i found also this setting:
   – content.transformer.complex.Rfc822ToSwf.pipeline=RFC822|html|*|pdf|Pdf2swf
   and i thinked that i can resolve the second problem but nothing to do.

   When i move one email html (with a signature) to a Alfresco’s folder, in the preview of this (in Share) i lost all html information incluse the signature.

   Any suggestion for this?

9. If I remember correctly, move (native in share) != move (via IMAP). The former should work fine. The preview (in share) you see surely depends on the mail at hand. Typical mail clients allow rendering multiple html documents. Mails of that kind worked fine for me so far. The only approach in this case is to concatenate these documents an hope for the best.

10. Installed it today on 5.0a community and functions just fine! nice work!

11. A little addition to installing on 5.0a, following things happen;

    When you have set the mode to Archive and you activate this module the mode goes back to Mixed, anything there can be done about this?

    Everytime you restart the (Alfresco) server you need to activate the module, it’s not set to auto-deploy, any tips on how to set this?

12. Hallo Hans,

    the module does not explicitly change the mode of the IMAP Server. ExtendedAttachmentExtractor “fixes” issues with attachments though. Its been a while ago I had the last look at the code, so I don’t want to rule out the chance the module introduces the side effect you see. I am sorry, but I don’t have to have a closer look at this time.

    I have seen the same (unexpected) module deployment behavior on other systems which are not running the email extension. I did not go deeper on this either, but I assume that it can be considered a bug in Surf.

    Ich habe versucht, dieses Add-on zu downloaden, aber es scheint, dass das Archiv nicht zur Verfügung steht. Wurde das URL zum Download geändert oder ist es nicht mehr möglich, das Add-on zu installieren?

    Leider sieht man in meiner Alfresco EE 4.2.3 Installation in der Detailansicht den Button “Anlagen” nicht, obwohl die eml-Files Anlagen haben. Eine Idee, woran das liegen könnte?

16. Wie sind die Dokumente ins System gekommen?

    Leider ist es so, dass nur der IMAP Server Attachments abfummelt und mit der Mail verdrahtet. Das ist so default und hat nichts mit der Extension zu tun. Attachments tauchen separat also nur als solche auf wenn das Dokument via IMAP ins System gekommen ist. Schön ist das natürlich nicht. Ich habe es so gelassen weil es für unsere Anwendung gut genug war.

17. Das ist schade, Wir laden die eml-Files über Share in die Dokumentenlibrary, da sich unser IMAP Client nicht mit dem Alfresco IMAP Server verträgt. Alfresco’s IMAP Server ist leider nur was für Outlook.

    Welche Probleme habt ihr denn mit anderen Clients gesehen bzw. was ist da bekannt?

19. Wir haben verschiedene andere IMAP Clients versucht. Es funktioniert nicht, da sich die Clients allesamt irgendwann aufhängen, bzw. kann man nach dem Upload vom IMAP Client nicht mehr auf die Mails zugreifen. Diverse IMAP Kommandos werden vom Server anders oder nicht interpretiert. Laut Alfresco wird nur Outlook unterstützt :-(

    wir hatten dazu ein Ticket mit Alfresco offen und wurden letztendlich auf das “Supported Platforms for Alfresco Enterprise” Dokument verwiesen, worin bei Third Party Integrations nur IMAP Outlook steht.

    I just wanted to confirm that your addon works perfectly and saved me from big trouble. I installed it on Alfresco 5.0.c that, as you know has a critical bug with email transform, so your fix is just awesome. Although, when i dragged an email, the preview is perfect, but i didnt get any attachement, maybe it is because i still didnt enable extraction attachement in alfresco-global.properties?

24. You’re welcome, Driss.

    As of 5.0.c it is the IMAP server executing attachment extraction. That’s why it does not work when you just drop an email file into a folder. I think that’s an issue the Alfresco guys should be fixing. I don’t think they have this on their radar today. You might what to have a look at MNT-13531.

26. Ich habe das Plugin erfolgreich unter 5.0.c zum Laufen gebracht. 2 Punkte allerdings, die mich etwas stören, beziehungsweise den Prod-Einsatz bei uns verhindern:

    1. Kann man das PlugIn als AMP zur Verfügung stellen? mit der Kopierei in das Webapps Directory sehe ich schnell eine Fehlerfalle beim Upgrade,…
    2. Unter 5.0 verdeckt das Flash-Plugin den Attachment Download Link, also kann man die Attachments nicht downloaden. Oder mach’ ich was falsch?

27. Die Diskussion amp vs. jar Extensions ist alt und lang. Ich selbst bin bekennender Gegner von amp – auch in der Disziplin Deployment. Leute in unserem Umfeld kommen auch da i.d.R. besser mit jar als mit amp zurecht. Exotische Applikationsserver wie Websphere spielen bei uns keine Rolle. Wer unbedingt amp haben will, dem ist es natürlich freigestellt die jar files in amps zu wrappen. Insofern ja, man kann für die Extensions relativ einfach amp Deployment-Artefakte erzeugen.

    Das Problem mit dem Download-Link kann ich hier mit einer 5.0.d und aktuellem Chrome nicht nachvollziehen. Wir sprechen von der document-details Seite nehme ich an. Auf der jedenfalls funktionieren für mich sowohl der Link unter “Attachments” wie auch “Download” einwandfrei.

28. OK, das mit den AMPs kann ich mir anschauen, habe ich zwar noch nie gemacht, sollte aber kein Problem darstellen.

    Das 2. Problem besteht allerdings weiterhin. Ich habe jetzt mit folgenden Browsern getestet und habe immer das gleiche Ergebnis: Das Preview Flash überlagert in der Detail View den Download Link!

    Getestet mit: Mac OS Chrome, Safari und Firefox. Nur wenn die Mail Header klein sind, und ich das Fenster auf die volle HD Breite aufziehe erscheint der Link. Ich schaue mir gerade die DIV Struktur an, ob man dort etwas unternehmen kann ;-)

    Thank you very much for this great work. I have installed the extension on Alfresco 4.2.4 enterprise. However it does not do what I expect from it to do. I expect from extension to extract attachments when I drag and drop the eml file into Share. Yes I read the hint, uncommented “sys:hidden” aspect, add

    “contentreich.email.imap.attachment.hideAttachmentFolders=false
    imap.server.attachments.extraction.enabled=true”

    to alfresco-global.properties file. Still I can’t get it work. I really need to know how to enable attachment extraction. Please explain a little bit.

30. Hallo Arthur,

    again (this time in in English ;), it is the IMAP Server triggering attachment extraction. If we want this to work when you just upload an eml file, we need logic recognizing the context and/or hacks/overrides in the IMAP Server. Kicking off the extraction from a rule might be another (simple) option.

31. Thanks to BPCP on github (who are you?) the following line in alfresco-global.properties gives you awesome pdf previews instead of the default flash.

    vielen Dank diese Erweiterung. Ich habe sie installiert (5.0d Community auf Debian 8-Server) und beinahe alles funktioniert. Das Einzige, was nicht geht ist die Vorschau des Mail-Bodys. Sinngemäß “sagt” Alfresco, dass für diesen Dokumenttyp keine Vorschau möglich ist.

    Muss man nach der Installation noch irgendeine Einstellung ändern?

    Nein, in Bezug auf Installation/Konfiguration steht hier eigentlich alles.

    Falls du die Transformer Pipeline eingebaut hast kann es sein, dass da bei dir irgendwas schief geht. Für mich und andere funktioniert sie so wie sie hier steht.

    danke für deine Antwort. Ich habe eine ganz “normale” frische Installation. Transformer Pipeline sagt mir leider überhaupt nichts; ich habe außer der Installation eurer Erweiterung bisher keine Änderung an Alfresco vorgenommen.

    diese Erweiterung funktioniert für Mails die ich per Hand in meinen Posteingang verschiebe (IMAP). Aber ich dachte an eine Archivierung der Mail in einer anderen Art. Ich lasse über meinen Forwarder alle Mail an meinen Mailserver und an Alfresco schicken (SMPT). Hierbei werden Mails aber nicht von der Erweiterung bearbeitet. Ist das normal oder habe ich eine Kofiguration vergessen? Ich benutze Alfresco 5.1 Community.

    diese Erweiterung dient der Darstellung von Emails in Share. Etwaige Attachments trennt der IMAP Server. Nicht perfekt, aber so ist das heute. Wenn ich recht entsinne schreiben wir hier keine Daten. Einige Ausnahme (bin da gerade nicht ganz sicher) könnte das Verstecken der Attachment Ordner sein.

    das stimmt. Die Attachment-Folders werden durch setzen des Parameters “contentreich.email.imap.attachment.hideAttachmentFolders=true” versteckt. Aber noch einmal zur Frage: Wenn ich eine eMail über meinen Mailclient (Thunderbird) an einen User im Alfresco schicke, wird die eMail in AlfrescoShare so angezeigt wie ich es mir wünsche (eine Mail mit verlinkem Anhang). Allerdings, wenn ich im Postfix-Forwarder ein “always_bcc=user@example.com” einrichte, bekomme ich die Standardansicht von Alfresco, also eMail und Attachment getrennt und für mich nicht ausreichend lesbar. Gibt es hierzu eine Lösung?

40. Seltsam. Habe mir nicht angeschaut was der embedded SMTP Server macht, aber wenn man ein RFC-822 (.eml) Dokument irgendwo mit Share hochlädt sieht alles schon gut aus. Nur Attachments werden dabei eben nicht abgefummelt. Im Grunde denke ich sollte es kein Big Deal sein es hinzubekommen, dass auch via SMTP ins System gespülte Mails in Share ordentlich aussehen. Was ganz genau bei dir das Problem ist weiß ich so aus dem Stand nicht.

    funktioniert diese Erweiterung nur für Mails im .eml-Format? Mit einer Test-eml-Datei funktioniert es. Wenn ich aber eine Mail aus meinem Mailprogramm (per drag and drop) hochlade, hat die den Mimetype “Binary File (Octet Stream)” und wird nicht als Mail erkannt. Gibt es da noch andere Möglichkeiten?

    die Geschichte steht und fällt mit dem Mimetypen. Daran ist so auch erst einmal nichts auszusetzen. Die Endung “.eml” unterstützt dabei. Drag & Drop ist abhängig vom Client und vom Desktop. Da “alles Mögliche” zu unterstützen wäre wohl unverhältnismäßig aufwending. IMAP kann eine Alternative sein.

    Hmm, also, wenn ich das richtig sehe, ist der Mime-Type auch nur weiterer Anhaltspunkt. Alfresco benutzt Apache Tika, um zu erkennen, um was fuer eine Art Datei es gerade geht. Wenn Tika jetzt Deinen ‘Octet Stream’ als E-Mail erkennt (/erkennen wuerde), koennte Alfresco das auch richtig einsortieren.

    Ich selber habe allerdings eher das andere Problem: der Mimetype stimmt schon, aber tika behauptet, dass das ja gar keine E-Mail sei.

46. The extension only displays properties defined in the model(s) shipping with alfresco. It does not introduce custom properties, change processing logic around default properties or write to them.

    You consider uploading emails using share. You might run into issues due to the fact that out of the box extraction of attachments will only work if email comes in via IMAP.
